Why We Exist
The average American funeral costs $9,420. That's a significant sum under any circumstances. But funeral purchases happen when families are at their most vulnerable - in shock, grieving, sleep-deprived, and often under real or manufactured time pressure.
Funeral homes know this. 80% add administrative fees - "handling charges," "facility fees," "documentation fees" - that aren't disclosed in initial quotes. These aren't illegal. They're just not something grieving families have the energy to catch.
We built LastExit after experiencing this firsthand. We lost family members and then received the bills. We did the research after the fact - and found we'd overpaid significantly on almost every line item.
We built this so you don't have to learn it the hard way.
What We Do
LastExit is a price transparency database for funeral services. We collect, analyze, and publish regional price data for:
- Direct cremation
- Caskets and alternative containers
- Obituary writing and publication
- Headstones and grave markers
- Emergency probate filing
We cover 500+ US cities with granular pricing data, and we publish state-by-state consumer rights guides so you know the laws that protect you.
How Our Data Works
Our prices are derived from:
- Public FTC General Price List (GPL) filings
- State funeral board records
- Direct family-reported cost submissions
- Regional cost-of-living and funeral industry data
We update our data annually. All prices are estimates and regional averages - your actual costs may vary. We always recommend getting 3+ quotes directly from providers before committing to anything.
Our Independence Pledge
LastExit accepts zero payment from funeral homes, cemeteries, or related businesses. Our revenue comes from families who purchase our paid plans - period. This alignment ensures our incentives are 100% on your side.
We will never:
- Accept paid placement in our price comparisons
- Allow a funeral home to influence our pricing data
- Sell your information to funeral homes or advertisers
- Present "sponsored" results without clear disclosure
